Description

This course aims to familiarize staff working in national and international NGOs with the concepts, mechanisms, processes, and best practices in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). The course will highlight the roles and responsibilities of various concerned actors, including NGOs. The DRR for NGOs course has been designed to complement the theoretical frameworks used in DRR with practical examples, real scenarios, and case studies.

 

This course will enable participants to:

  • Identify basic concepts, terminology, risk factors, and pillars of DRR
  • Understand international DRR frameworks and their coherence with 2030 agenda
  • Define global hazards and their impacts
  • Construct resilience campaigns and apply community-based DRR
  • Recognize the importance of information management and communication in disaster prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery
  • Explore DRR interventions and the roles of various actors in disasters
 
Subject Matter Expert
Zahi Chahine, MA, MBA  

As the Head of the Disaster Risk Management Unit at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Mr. Chahine is spearheading national efforts to enhance Lebanon’s resilience to withstand natural and manmade disasters.

 

With extensive experience in the local and international public and private sector, he has been investing in his expertise to set the business case to integrate disaster risk reduction into development and resilience. He oversees the development and update of national disaster risk reduction strategies that will feed into national action plans. He works with national counterparts to enhance disaster risk reduction structure, capacities, and skills. Under his leadership the DRM Unit has further evolved making use of human, technical and technological resources, and innovations to safeguard lives, assets, and infrastructure and development gains. He is also the National Technical focal point for the Sendai Framework and rapporteur for several national disaster committees. Mr. Chahine holds a master’s degree in law and master’s degree in business.
