The three-day workshop focused on the interface of foreign policy and health, and trained participants on skills needed to negotiate with various regional and international stakeholders, and cross-border solutions for emerging health needs, especially at times of protracted conflicts. The workshop, which adopted a highly participatory approach, drew on the professional experiences of 13 regional and international facilitators and speakers. It included lectures by internationally-renowned experts in the field of global health diplomacy, multi-stakeholder panels, and working groups. A simulation exercise on “Negotiation on Health” was held in the evening to complement participants’ learning experience. The workshop hosted around forty-two participants from different countries and with different professional backgrounds representing various health sectors including ministries, non-governmental organizations, international humanitarian aid organizations, educational organizations, and the private sector. Among participants of the workshop were the head of mission of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the regional primary healthcare program manager at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the director of primary healthcare department at Ministry of Health of Kuwait, and the International Health Relations coordinator at the Ministry of Health of Qatar. Other represented organizations and institutions included the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), International Medical Corps (IMC), Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, and AUB.

The Global Health Centre (GHC) is the Graduate Institute’s research centre on global health governance and diplomacy. It is one of the first of its kind and it reflects the wider trend in both the practice and the analysis of global health, which pays increasing attention to the links between health, foreign policy, trade and development. The Centre builds capacity by engaging in research, knowledge translation and diffusion as well as by conducting executive training in global health diplomacy for and with major stakeholders in Geneva and worldwide. The Global Health Centre offers courses in Geneva in collaboration with the Institute’s Executive Education Department and in cooperation with partners in other locations.​
