Description

The Global Health Institute (GHI) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) hosted an event entitled, "Wounds of War: The Gaza Experience Through the Eyes of Dr. Ghassan Abu Sitta," on December 21, 2023, in partnership with the Institute for Palestine Studies (IPS) and the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS), and in the presence of Dr. Fadlo Khuri, AUB President. The event shed light on the profound impact of conflict on the people and healthcare system of Gaza, and detailed what happened and is still happening in Gaza through the eyes of Dr. Ghassan Abu Sitta, who was there to bear witness to the deliberate dismantlement of the health system.   During the event, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sitta, a field leading Plastic Surgeon and the director of the Conflict Medicine Program (CMP) at AUB GHI, provided a firsthand account of the recent conflict in Gaza and the harrowing experiences. He expressed his commitment to being on the ground, describing the unprecedented challenging conditions faced by both the people and the healthcare system, by illustrating the multi-epidemic nature of the conflict, which saw waves of injuries, communicable diseases, malnutrition, non-communicable diseases, and even cancers emerging as healthcare services crumbled.   A moderated discussion followed, featuring Dr. Ghassan Abu Sitta where he highlighted the intricate interplay between conflict, health, and human resilience. He also emphasized the urgent need for adjustments and updates to the preparedness measures within the Conflict Medicine Program at GHI, given the recent war and the resulting shortage of medical supplies.
