Course Description
Course Aims
This course equips learners with the basic conceptual knowledge in conflict medicine, which combines the medicine and philosophy disciplines. The course touches on how conflicts and their corresponding ecologies of war impact individual and population health.
Topics Covered
The course begins with a deep dive into the causes and trends of conflict. It then discusses the actors involved in conflict and humanitarian action, as well as the laws and norms that seek to define and guide these actors. This is coupled with a more explicit health focus that covers topics such as political economy of health, marginalized communities, food security, health systems in conflict, and trauma and social wounds, all in the context of conflict.
Competencies
Learners completing this course will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to identify key theories and concepts related to conflict and forced migration
- Identify the major actors, their roles, and their interconnectedness in settings of conflict and fragility
- Recognize the impact of conflict on health from a systems and community perspective
- Recognize the importance of addressing psychological trauma and social wounds in conflict
